First Multiple Sclerosis treatment guidelines launched in UAE

The first treatment guidelines for Multiple Sclerosis (MS) patients in the UAE have been introduced by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (NMSS).

Developed by a scientific task force, the guidelines are designed to provide optimal medical support for MS patients.

The guidelines are based on global evidence and tailored to address the country's variations in healthcare coverage and patient preferences.

They cover a range of topics, including MS-modifying therapies, treatment options during pregnancy and lactation, and pediatric MS, aiming to ensure the most effective treatments for as many patients as possible.

Dr. Fatima Al Kaabi, Vice Chair of NMSS, highlighted that these are the first MS treatment guidelines in the UAE, offering hope for those newly diagnosed or living with MS.

She noted that the guidelines will help physicians choose the best treatment, reduce side effects, and improve prescription accuracy. They will also be updated regularly to reflect the latest research and clinical advances.

Dr. Ahmed Shatila, Chair of the NMSS Medical Advisory Committee and Consultant Neurologist at Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City, emphasized the significance of these guidelines in improving the quality of care for MS patients in the UAE.

In addition to the guidelines, NMSS has launched the first MS Helpline in the UAE. This service, available daily from 10:00 am to 10:00 pm at 800 677, offers patients access to resources, referrals and guidance on MS care.

The new guidelines are published in the Multiple Sclerosis and Related Disorders journal, an international journal supported by key researchers from all neuroscience domains that focus on MS and associated conditions.
